Frequently Asked Questions

Why was Sunshine Kids Clinic established?

Sunshine Kids Clinic was founded by Dr. Preena Uppal with the vision of building a centre of excellence dedicated to supporting children, adolescents and their families across Sydney. It operates as a comprehensive assessment and treatment facility, conveniently situated with easy access to transport and parking.

A highly skilled and diverse specialist team has been brought together under one roof. This team includes Developmental Paediatricians, Paediatric Neurologist, Dietitians, Psychiatrist, Occupational Therapist, Medical Receptionist, Psychologist, ADHD Coach, Paediatric Sleep Specialist and General Paediatrician.

The team shares a strong commitment to collaborative care. As co-located professionals, they are able to exchange insights and combine their expertise when working with each child. For many presentations, a multi-disciplinary assessment approach is available. This allows professionals to assess your child together on the same day, discuss their findings collectively, and provide a unified and agreed set of recommendations. The guiding principle is to help every child achieve their fullest potential through empathy, respect and professionalism.

What concerns may require an appointment?

The specialist team of more than 10 professionals supports children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of developmental, behavioural, emotional and learning challenges. These include ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, school refusal, anxiety, language delays, articulation difficulties, fine and gross motor challenges, and concerns relating to weight management.

In addition, the General Paediatrician and Paediatric Sleep Physician offer expert care within their respective specialties and manage various medical and sleep-related concerns.

What is a multi-disciplinary assessment?

A multi-disciplinary assessment involves a coordinated evaluation conducted by a team of professionals who work together in a joint consultation, rather than assessing a child separately within their individual disciplines.

For school-aged children, this model has been designed as a comprehensive and collaborative team assessment, providing busy families with access to an expert panel within a single centre. Both parents and children participate throughout the assessment day.

This innovative and integrated model of care is intended for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years who present with developmental, learning, attention or behavioural concerns. The assessment typically includes:

  • An evaluation by a Developmental Paediatrician

  • A Clinical Psychologist assessment

  • A nutritional review conducted by an Accredited Practising Dietitian

  • A hearing assessment

  • A cognitive evaluation including an IQ assessment

  • An educational assessment examining strengths and challenges in areas such as literacy and numeracy

  • A review of teacher reports and standardised assessment questionnaires

  • A collaborative case conference involving all professionals who assessed your child

  • A comprehensive multi-disciplinary plan outlining recommended therapies, learning support strategies or further investigations

  • A feedback session and detailed discussion with the family

How can I determine whether my child requires a multi-disciplinary assessment or an appointment with a single practitioner?

At Sunshine Kids Clinic, comprehensive early childhood and school-age multi-disciplinary assessments are regarded as best practice within the field. When there are concerns affecting a child or adolescent across several areas such as development, behaviour, learning, nutrition, or attention - a multi-disciplinary assessment is often the most appropriate approach. This is particularly relevant when the concerns are significant enough to justify a consultation with a Developmental Paediatrician.

A key advantage of these structured assessment days is convenience. Families can avoid multiple separate appointments with different health professionals, reducing time away from school and work.

In contrast, if concerns relate to only one specific area, seeing an individual practitioner may be more suitable. For example:

  • Behavioural or emotional challenges may require consultation with a psychologist.

  • Dietary or nutrition concerns may warrant an appointment with a dietitian.

Your General Practitioner is well placed to advise you on the most suitable pathway for assessment based on your child’s needs.

Developmental Paediatricians are available to participate in comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessments and to provide ongoing follow-up care for children and adolescents aged 6 months to 18 years. If your child has already received a diagnosis following a comprehensive assessment, or is currently undergoing treatment, an appointment with a Developmental Paediatrician can be organised for continued management and support.

Are reports issued after assessments?

Reports are consistently provided following a multi-disciplinary assessment, and communication with your General Practitioner takes place routinely after all follow-up appointments with Paediatricians. Reports can also be supplied after consultations with other practitioners. In certain instances, these reports are included as part of standard procedure, while in others, an additional fee may apply.

Some practitioner assessments are conducted across multiple appointments. In such situations, the report is forwarded to your General Practitioner only once the full assessment process has been completed.

Is an appointment required for medication scripts?

In most cases where Developmental Paediatricians prescribe medication, including those used to manage conditions such as ADHD, regular reviews are essential. These reviews ensure that the dosage remains appropriate, potential side effects are carefully monitored, and the medication is used safely and effectively.

For this reason, prescriptions are not issued without an appointment unless there are exceptional circumstances. Certain medications relating to general paediatric concerns, such as sleep difficulties, constipation, asthma, and specific specialty formulas, may be prescribed directly by your General Practitioner.
